This past weekend, I’ve been reflecting a lot on the power of positivity and gratitude in my life. I’ve always been a person who naturally looks on the bright side of things, whether things were going great or they were really crappy. I’m coming to realize what a gift that is, even though at times I can get caught up in self-pity and complaining, about big and little things..
But what good does that do? None. Who am I helping by complaining? No one. How is having a pity party for one going to help my situation? Not at all.
Reality check: No one cares about you groaning that you’re up early Monday morning to start work. That’s just the truth. Stop complaining about it, pour your coffee and thank God that you have a job to complain about.
Sure, you can acknowledge that you are in a crappy situation. But then we each have a choice to make- an intentional choice to let that crappy person/situation/feeling affect us negatively or to actively try to see the lesson in it. To rise above the situation, and grow.
Don’t just take my word for it. Choosing to have an attitude of gratitude is scientifically proven to improve physical and psychological health, self-esteem, and mental strength. It also helps open the door to more relationships, which totally makes sense to me. I have always admired in Carl and in many of my friends their abilities to always look for the good in things. It always inspires me and calls me on, instead of allowing me to wallow in negativity.
There are so many ways to grow in gratitude in your life. Both Carl and I like to start and end our days by sharing what we’re grateful for, big or small. Just waking up and having another day is something we are never guaranteed and something to be grateful for. Habits like this, journaling, etc. are great ways to help you take notice of all the things in your life that can sometimes go unappreciated.

Grateful for life, grateful for faith, grateful for friendships and love. All is a gift.
